The financial services sector has been in the sights of the European Commission and competition authorities in the EU Member States for many years. This scrutiny has recently been heightened to a level not seen before.In June 2005, the European Commission, under its new "proactive" competition policy, announced sector inquires into retail insurance and wholesale and retail banking. In the UK, the Competition Commission is currently investigating store cards, the supply of home credit, and banking services in Northern Ireland and the OFT and the Financial Services Authority are investigating payment protection insurance.
