“Orange the World” – Gleiss Lutz takes a stand on violence against women and girls

Gleiss Lutz has again sent a visible signal against violence against women and girls as part of the Orange the World campaign.

In the evening and night hours of 25 November, the entire Stuttgart office building was lit up in orange. In Frankfurt, the conference area on the 16th floor of the Gleiss Lutz office glowed orange, making it clearly visible from far away.

Orange the World is an initiative by UN Women, the United Nations organisation dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. Starting on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls declared by the UN, buildings in numerous cities all over the world will be lit up in orange to kick off several days of activism against gender-based violence. This year’s campaign focuses on intimate partner violence.

“Gleiss Lutz supports the aims of the campaign to raise awareness about violence against women and girls and to counter the societal taboo surrounding this topic. As a firm, we are dedicated to supporting women’s rights, promoting non-violence, and fostering peaceful coexistence among all people”, said Dr. Ralf Morshäuser, co-managing partner at Gleiss Lutz, of its participation in the campaign.

Dr. Johann Wagner, co-managing partner at Gleiss Lutz, stressed the relevance of the initiative: “Violence against women and girls is one of the most common human rights violations – even here in Germany. The statistics from last year are deeply worrying”.

Violence against women and girls is on the rise in Germany. According to the latest statistics from the Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt), 155 women died from intimate partner violence in 2023, up from 133 in the previous year. There were also 256,276 victims of domestic violence, 6.5% more than in 2022.

UN Women reports that in 2023, one woman or girl was killed by her partner or a family member every 10 minutes across the world.

Orange the World is supported by a variety of organisations including Zonta, a global association of professional women in positions of responsibility, which is dedicated to improving the legal, political, economic and professional situation of women: https://zonta-union.de/
