Gleiss Lutz gets green light from Commission: investment aid for Deutsche Solar AG’s solar wafer plant authorised

The European Commission has authorised EUR 45 million of regional investment aid for Deutsche Solar AG for the production of solar wafers in Freiberg, Germany. The project is one of the largest of its kind in recent years, involving an investment of EUR 350 million, and is expected to create at least 130 new jobs in the region.

The state aid investigation lasted two years, and dealt with the fundamental issue as to which extent aid already received by the same company for previous investments in the same sector could be taken into account in calculating the aid intensity.

The case was handled by Ulrich Soltész (partner) and Jens Werner (associate, both EU State aid, Brussels). For many years Gleiss Lutz has been a key player in the field of EU State aid with a particular focus on renewable energies and semiconductors.
